Yate Town  0    Didcot Town  2

Saturday, 01 February 2003

Didcot made it five straight wins in 2003 with a thoroughly deserved 2-0 victory at third placed Yate Town on Saturday.

Last season Didcot were trounced 6-2 at Lodge Road but there was very little chance of a repeat as the visitors applied all the early pressure. A good run and shot from Lee Newport tested Yate keeper Tony Court in the 10th minute. Jamie Heapy then volleyed narrowly over the bar after a good cross into the box by Damien Oglesby but Didcot?s early endeavor paid off shortly afterwards. Defender Scott Davis grabbed his second goal in a week when he bundled a Nigel Emsden corner home midway through the half. The home side had shown very little coming forward and Paul Metheringham headed their only chance of the first period wide of the post in the 36th minute.

Half Time: 0-1

Presumably after some choice words from their manager the Yate players started the second half looking like a different team. Didcot were soon under pressure and Leon Simpson should have down better with a header from a long ball into the box. Davis then bravely cleared the ball off the goal line in the 54th minute as Didcot failed to clear a corner. Didcot always looked capable of adding another and Heapy nearly caught out Court with a snap shot on the hour. But in the 68th minute the visitors did manage to double their advantage. Darren McNamara and Newport combined well to set-up Ian Concannon who made no mistake from close-range. Didcot keeper Keith McLoughlin produced a superb save from Metheringham in the 81st minute as the visitors battled hard to keep a clean sheet. Yate?s chances of getting back into the game disappeared with five minutes remaining when Neil Long received a red card for elbowing Didcot skipper Andy Cooper.

With games in hand on the clubs at the top this win keeps Didcot?s faint hopes of challenging for the Premier Division title alive.
