Pewsey Vale FC  0    Almondsbury Town  3

Tuesday, 28 January 2003

Pewsey Vale missed the chance to move away from the relegation zone as an Almondsbury side eased to victory at the Recreation Ground.

The home side remain fourth from the bottom following Tuesdays result but they have played two more matches than each of the teams below them. This result left Pewsey manager, Nobby Wootton, still looking for his first win in the league. Wootton said; "it was very disappointing definitely our worst performance of the season".

Almondsbury was far the better side all night and Pewsey did not even have a spell of five or ten minutes where they dominated. Pewsey made the worst possible start and conceded a goal inside two minutes when a powerful 20-yard shot from Carl Rutter caught the home defence unaware giving home team keeper Dave Hunt no chance.

Half Time: 0-1

Pewsey were forced to soak up plenty of pressure and it took a goal line clearance to deny Almondsbury a second goal early in the second half. Hunt made a great diving save to foil Alex Stoker but was guilty of the mistake that led to mid table Almondsbury doubling their advantage in the 58th minute. Defender Tony Dyer was cautioned for a foul and former Melksham man Hunt failed to claim the resulting free kick leaving Martin Black with a simple tap in. The game became scrappy with Pewsey posing few problems for Almondsbury, Pewsey manager Wootton introduced his three subs Mick Martin, Micky Goodwin, and Chris Oram for Tom Ritchie, Andy Olsen and Richard Pearson but the changes made little difference and Rutter scored again to seal the win for the visitors.
