Pegasus Juniors  2    Southall Town  1

Saturday, 25 January 2003

Pegasus Juniors continued to display the determination and team spirit that nearly gained a result last week against high flying Highworth Town, when they entertained another team at the top end of the table.

Straight from the kick off Pegasus showed a determination that had appeared lacking before Christmas; they produced a performance with controlled aggression coupled with the skill of Adriano Girolami and pace of Del Ewers that gave the visiting defence a torrid afternoon. After sixteen minutes, Pegasus were awarded a free kick on the left, this was taken by Girolami and acrobatically crashed into the net by Pete Wallace to give the home a deserved lead. Surprisingly, for a few minutes the goal seemed to have an adverse effect on the Hereford side, however, after a few reminders from the management they regained their composure. On the half hour a vicious swerving shot from Girolami hit the side netting, minutes later Gavin Stone lobbed goalkeeper Kenny Lavender from eighteen yards. On the stroke of half time Ewers and Neal Hotchkiss combined for Wallace to flash his shot on the turn just wide of the near post.

Half Time: 1-0

Six minutes after the interval the Pegasus defence snuffed out a Southall attack and Girolami picked out Ewers with a through pass, the little winger beat his marker only to see his shot blocked by Lavender with his legs. The same scenario was repeated in the 64th minute; this time Ewers ran thirty yards before calmly beating Lavender to register his first goal for the club. The basement side were kept in the game when Matt Taylor produced a fine save low to his right from a deflected free kick. Darren Preece who was playing with more freedom since the New Year found Ewers with an exquisite pass but the shot flashed narrowly wide of the upright. Shortly after this Southall made two tactical substitutions, that gave them a sharper cutting edge, this was soon rewarded when Chris Glynn scrambled the ball into the net. The visitors pushed hard for the equalising goal that required some resolute and determined defending not only from the defence marshalled by Steve Aubrey and Darren Braithwaite but from every team member, such was the resolve of the team that despite all the pressure applied upon them by the visitors, Taylor was rarely tested.

Pegasus pulled off a solid victory and their first win of the year and the first under the present management team of Paul Mann and Chris Hyde, with performances like this there should be more points in the next few games.
