Saturday, 18 January 2003

A Thompson hat trick (Liam not Pewsey Chairman Rob) sealed victory for Pewsey Vale in their second round tie with Wiltshire League side Biddlestone beating them 5 - 1.

Pewsey opened well which came as no surprise as early as the 7th minute Barry Flippance was denied by the home keeper Kevin Read who turned his shot away after he ran onto a good through ball. Three minutes later Flippance beat the keeper to put the Vale into the lead with a powerful shot after a good move started by defender Tony Dyer. Pewsey continued their pressure on the Biddlestone defence and only some good saves by Read denied Pewsey increasing the lead. Thompson had a shot tipped away and in the 20th minute the Biddestone defence was breached when a Micky Goodwin cross found Thompson who headed just over the bar. Two minutes later the defensive wall was again breached when a move that came from deep in the Vale half from defender Mark Stevens to Doug Imrie on the left side, Imrie?s cross found Thompson to put the Vale two up. On 40 minutes a good 20 yard shot by Nick Fielding for Biddlestone went over the bar but Pewsey went into the break well in control of the match.

Half Time: 0 ? 2

After the break Pewsey?s Dave Hunt was brought into the action having to make two great saves, first stopping a Jay Ritchie shot and then one from Paul Penner. Ross Anderson Thompson Flippance and Goodwin kept up the pressure on the home side defence and the Pewsey midfield and defence continued to break down any advance towards the Pewsey goal. Doug Imrie was unlucky for Pewsey shooting just wide. Biddlestone had Nick Fielding sent off on the hour for what looked like a deliberate kick at Goodwin. Pewsey went three nil up on 65 minutes after good work between Anderson and Imrie who found Goodwin to plant a 25 yard shot past the home keeper Read. Minutes later Imrie was again unlucky when he hit the post as Pewsey continued to dominate the match. Thompson?s second goal came on the 75th minute when he beat the keeper at the near post and he got his hat trick in the 83rd minute when he run at the home defence and was brought down in the penalty area, he got up to convert the penalty and record his hat trick. Will Edwards scored a late consolation goal for Biddestone in the 87th minute.

Another great team performance by the Vale showing great commitment and a great fighting spirit.
