Didcot Town  7    Wantage Town  0

Tuesday, 14 January 2003

Didcot recorded their biggest League win at the Loop Meadow Stadium with a seven-goal demolition of Wantage Town on Tuesday night.

There was little indication of what was to come as both sides cancelled each other out for the first quarter of an hour. The home side eventually opened the scoring with Lee Newport?s first goal for the club since his move, ironically, from Wantage. Andy Cooper sent a superb ball to Ian Concannon who crossed perfectly for Newport to head home in the 18th minute. Cooper came close himself shortly after but nodded Concannon?s deep corner narrowly wide of the far post. Wantage keeper Paul Belcher made a good save from Concannon and then had to be alert when Darren McNamara tried his luck from distance. Didcot doubled the lead just after the half hour when Andy Parsons finished off a fine move involving Damien Oglesby, Jamie Heapy and Concannon. The visitor?s first shot didn?t arrive until the 39th minute when Chris Roche shot over from 20 yards. Two minutes later Peter Broad was also narrowly off target with a 25-yard free kick but it was the home side that added to the scoring before the interval. Heapy and Concannon combined brilliantly before Concannon swept the ball home from 6 yards.

Half Time: 3-0

Concannon added Didcot?s 4th a minute into the second half with a fine strike from the edge of the box. Heapy turned provider again in the 55th minute as Concannon rounded Belcher to claim his hat trick and Didcot?s 5th. McNamara tried his luck from 30 yards a minute later but Belcher was equal to it. Concannon came close with two headers before notching his fourth and Didcot?s sixth in the 79th minute. Substitute Terry Morrisey created space on the right and Concannon made no mistake from point blank range. Wantage continued to battle hard and Paul Baker brought a fine save from Jeff Simmonds before the home side grabbed their 7th goal in the closing moments Lee Nix slipping the ball home after being put clear by Heapy to notch his first for the club.
