Abingdon United  0    Yate Town  2

Saturday, 04 January 2003

Abingdon United?s Championship aspirations were dealt a blow as third placed Yate came away from North Court Road with all the points.

Abingdon were without their strike force as Pete Moss is away and Frankie Dorrian unavailable. Kai Ridley is still struggling with an Achilles injury leaving United to put defenders Ryan Curtin and Andy Marriott up front. The visitors were the better side in the first half, creating most of the chances but took only one after quarter of an hour. Prolific scorer Metheringham got on the end of a cross to the far post to head home.

Half Time: 0-1

The second period saw a more even affair with the home side creating few opportunities. Ryan Curtin was unlucky with an effort that was smothered by the visiting keeper. A couple of shots were blocked by defenders to deny United. The visitors took advantage in the 64th minute as they came out of their area after a scramble to go upfield and score their second. A low ball went across the area and Howse came in unmarked to slot home at the far post to put the game beyond the home sides reach.

Abingdon strived hard and competed but it was not to be their day and they couldn?t break down a solid Yate Town defence.
