Chipping Norton  2    Ardley United  1

Saturday, 21 December 2002

Chipping Norton Town won this top of the table clash at Walterbush Road against Ardley Utd by 2 goals to 1. The match was played in dense fog throughout, but the spectators present enjoyed a Christmas cracker.

Chippy could have had a penalty in the first minute when Mark Odom appeared to have been brought down by Dale Harris in the Ardley goal but the result was only a corner. Chippy had a chance to take the lead on 25 minutes but Craig Dore?s inch perfect free kick was headed wide by Mark Dennis. Dennis made up for his miss by putting Chippy in front on 38 minutes, when a mistake by Ausman Butt resulted in Dennis scoring from 20 yards out. Ardley then got into the game without really troubling Winter in the home goal.

Half Time: 1-0

The visitors should have equalised on 55 minutes but Jeremy Winter made a brilliant double save from Stuart Beavon. Town scored their second on 62 minutes when after excellent work from the impressive Mark Dennis resulted in Gary Wright scoring his third in three games. Town could have scored more, Dennis shaving a post and player/Manager Phil Heath seeing an effort fly wide. The visitors scored a consolation deep into injury time when Gary Clifford scored a penalty and after 7 minutes of injury time, ref Nick Waite finally blew his whistle to give Chippy three much deserved points.
