Yate Town  2    Carterton Town  3

Tuesday, 03 December 2002

Carterton won at Lodge road for the second time this season, with a narrow victory on Tuesday night. They attacked right from the start, but it was Yate who nearly took an early lead, Neil Long's diving header from close range was well saved by Carterton keeper Nick Heritage on 13 minutes.

Carterton took the lead 5 minutes later, through captain James Mortimer Jones. A low ball across the goal caused havoc and Jones slid in to score. The visitors extended their lead on 28th minutes, Mark Threllfall's free kick was only parried by Wood and Kenny Clarke followed up to tuck away to score for 2-0.

Carterton went in at half time in control and more likely to add a third, they did so on 53 minutes when Clarke got his second, lobbing Wood with aplomb. The game turned completely after that with Yate battering their opponents. The fight back started with an excellent Davidge cross headed in by Meths. 40 seconds later Ross Casey showed exactly how to strike a ball, when he beat two men and sweetly half volleyed past Heritage at his near post. There was a sudden buzz around the ground and Yate were inches away from an equaliser when Davidges low cross was just missed by the incoming Dempsey.

Further chances went begging after that, Barlass had a header well saved by Heritage and 4 minutes into injury time Davidge and Meths combined to somehow miss from 5 yards when Adie Holder cleared their tame effort.

Yet again failure to beat other title chasing sides may be Yate's downfall in acheiving their ambition of promotion this season
