Yate Town  4    Wantage Town  0

Saturday, 14 December 2002

Yate disposed of second bottom Wantage with ease, this was a chance to improve their goal difference that was gratefully taken.

The chances came right from the start, Paul Dempsey's effort was well saved by Paul Belcher at the expense of a corner on 7 minutes. From the resulting corner from Ian Howse, Leon Simpson flicked on and Neil Long headed Yate in front from 4 yards. Debut boy Gary Powell fiercely headed over 2 minutes later. On 15 minutes Yate increased their lead when the ever-dangerous Simpson held the ball up well and played it off to Metheringham who fed Kevin Coles and he picked his spot for an excellent goal. The points were more or less sealed on half time as Paul Dempsey chipped Belcher for a classy third and a dominating half time lead.

Half Time: 3-0

The second half was also dominated by Yate but they only managed one more after the break, the excellent Powell's cross-cum-shot from the touchline went over Belcher and into the top corner. With Powell's pinpoint crossing and strong midfield possession more goals looked likely. Ross Casey had two well struck long range efforts well saved and substitute Tony Bennett could of had a hat trick. The pick of his chances after a strong run and getting past his man he lobbed just over the bar with Belcher off his line. The referee and his assistants made some dubious decisions that spoilt the game with Bennett picking up a dubious booking for a challenge.

A good performance from title contenders Yate Town, however, they face a tough task next week at home to league leaders North Leigh.
