Highworth Town 1 Wantage Town 1
Saturday, 23 November 2002
Wantage pick up an excellent point away to high-riding Highworth.
Early chances were limited to long-range efforts, with Paul Belcher being equal to the Highworth attacks and Ross Tyler seeing his long-range drive dip over the bar. Tom Larman latched on to a poor back pass and was taken out by the keeper, but the referee waved play on. Wantage's perseverance paid off in the 37th minute when the Highworth keeper uprooted Chris Roche, who coolly stepped up to convert the spot kick.
The Wantage defence came under heavy pressure after the break, but they held out, despite one hectic goalmouth scramble that resulted in several goal line clearances. In the 85th minute, Wantage could have had the game sewn up when Roach went through one on one with the keeper, only to see his shot drift just wide of a post. In the 90th minute, Highworth's pressure paid off when a shot was deflected in off a Wantage defender.
