Abingdon United  3    Gloucester United  1

Saturday, 23 November 2002

Abingdon United came good in the second half to complete a treble over their Gloucestershire rivals having already beaten them away and at home in the Floodlit Cup.

The first half seemed to be going the way of many of their recent matches as they created a hatful of chances and took none. After 18 minutes a free kick was deflected but the visiting keeper punched away and then it bounced off Frankie Dorrian?s shins and the keeper saved again. Within 5 minutes Dorrian could only watch as his shot, after being set up by Pete Moss, bounced off the angle of bar and post and over. Soon after Ryan Curtin volleyed just wide as an up and under was misjudged by keeper Bennett and the ball bounced to the United player. Then Chris Hooper charged through the centre of defence and laid the ball to Pete Moss who got under the ball and fired way too high.

Half Time: 0-0

Within 5 minutes of the second half starting Abingdon at last took advantage as Bennett parried away a vicious shot from Pete Moss but Dean Moss came in on the far side and drove the ball home. Abingdon were quickly two up as Dean Moss got his second by smacking a low whipped in cross from Darren Beckett past the visitor?s goalie. The home side were well in control and looking to extend the lead and Gloucester had only the occasional foray forward but didn?t look likely to break through. With quarter of an hour to go Darren Beckett sliced the defence open with his pace but was foiled by Bennett who dived at his feet to smother the ball. The visitor?s best chance so far saw Maggs see a curling effort sail just over. Then with five minutes to go a free kick was headed back across goal by Andy Marriott and Chris Hooper was quick to react and head the ball into the back of the net.

Gloucester got a consolation score a minute from time as Maggs beat the offside to clip the ball between the posts.
