Pegasus Juniors  4    Pewsey Vale FC  1

Saturday, 19 October 2002

Pegasus Juniors hosted Pewsey Vale in a Premier Division fixture on Saturday. The visitors were runners up in Division One West last season guided by Don Rogers the ex Swindon Town player.

The home team surprised their Wiltshire visitors with a goal in the 3rd minute of the game when Adam Stephens under pressure from Pete Wallace failed to control a cross from the left that presented the home striker with a difficult goal scoring opportunity. Wallace calmly stroked the ball past the advancing keeper Anthony Betterton. This early advantage was the just the tonic the home team required and they started to play with more confidence, in the 15th minute a smart interchange between Neal Hotchkiss and Gavin Stone ended the latter beating two defenders before bringing a fine fingertip save from Betterton. Two minutes later the home side had the ball in the net after a neat exchange of headers between Wallace and Gary Stevens who was adjudged to have been in an offside position. Stevens being a late replacement for Laurence Helme who failed a fitness test on an injured ankle. The best move of the game in the 33rd minute involved six home players before Hotchkiss? goal bound shot was well saved by the keeper. Shortly afterwards Pegasus Juniors doubled the advantage when a Hotchkiss free kick was met by Wallace his bullet like header gave the visiting goal minder little chance. Straight from the restart the Hereford side increased the lead when they were awarded a free kick in the opposition half close to the corner flag, Hotchkiss was again the provider this time for captain Darren Preece to volley into the far corner of the goal.

Half Time: 3-0

On the hour mark seventeen year old Kyle Waring making his home debut pulled off two fine saves at the expense of a corner kick. This was partially cleared and Martin Churchward volleyed the ball past the helpless youngster. Pewsey applied some pressure for a while but the home defence with Mike Symonds and Steve Aubrey dominant held firm. In the 89th minute man-of-the-match Wallace completed his hat trick when he guided home a Gavin Stone corner kick.
