Bedfont  1    Didcot Town  3

Saturday, 19 October 2002

Didcot made hard work of a game that they dominated throughout and should have had wrapped up by half time.

Town literally laid siege to the Bedfont goal in the opening quarter of an hour. Ian Concannon volleyed wide after a corner was only half cleared and then Andy Cooper headed narrowly over the bar. The opening goal came in the 9th minute. Concannon had a point blank shot saved on the line by keeper Mathew Brown and the ball was lashed away for a corner. Glyn Jones swung the ball in and after Cooper had seen his initial header blocked, Jones crossed back into the middle and this time Concannon made no mistake from 6 yards. Bedfont rarely threatened but when they did found keeper Jeff Simmonds in fine form. Midway through the half Simmonds pulled off a good save low to his left after a speculative shot from 20 yards threatened to level things. As the opening period drew to a close Glyn Jones created all sorts of problems for the home side on the left wing. Twice Jones broke into the box only for his dangerous low crosses to elude everyone in the middle. On the stroke of half-time Didcot finally managed to double their lead. Cooper released Concannon on the right and he waited for the right moment to square the ball to Jamie Heapy who struck a low shot inside the far post.

Half Time: 0-2

Despite plenty of endeavour Didcot lost their way a bit after the break. Chris Johnson found his way into the referee?s book for diving after it seemed like he?d been brought down by Brown in the box. At the other end Mark Postins brought a good save from Simmonds but still most of the threat came from Didcot. Concannon missed a gilt edged chance with 20 minutes remaining. Cooper?s long ball eluded a defender and left Concannon clean through. Normally he would have made no mistake but somehow he lifted the ball agonisingly over the crossbar. It looked like a costly miss when Bedfont reduced the arrears with 10 minutes remaining. Poor marking at the back post let in Postins who side-footed home past Simmonds. It brought about an anxious few moments before substitute Damien Oglesby restored the two-goal cushion in the dying moments. Dave Beaven threaded the ball into the area and Oglesby calmly prodded in his first goal of the season.

Didcot will now be hoping for a home draw after being drawn away four times already in the FA Cup and Vase this campaign.
