Highworth Town  1    Shortwood United  1

Saturday, 05 October 2002

The wonderful Indian Summer weather continues along with Highworth Towns recent run of drawn matches, this time a hard fought draw with an entertaining and enterprising Shortwood United whose lowly league position belies the quality of their football.

The first half was really a tale of two goalkeeper's, Highworth's Tom King and Shortwood?s Ryan Gannaway, who between them pulled off some fantastic saves to deny both sets of strikers, ensuring a 0-0 score-line at halftime.

Shortwood took a deserved lead in the 54th minute when Highworth defender Andy Wollen got caught in possession just outside his own area. The ball was worked across the box to Richard Evans who shot past keeper King from close distance. Highworth's equaliser came in the 71st minute from the evergreen Dave Webb, who, following good work from Justin Miller despatched a crisp volley into the bottom corner of the Shortwood net from 15 yards. All out attack from Highworth failed to produce any further goals. A couple of very close calls for penalties were turned down by Referee, David Lovegrove and the match ended all square at 1-1,which was a fair overall reflection of the game.

Playing as they did, it is difficult to imagine John Evans's Shortwood being in the bottom half of the table too long and they will surely move up the table when just a little bit more rub of the green goes their way.
