HOLDERS GO OUT

Fairford Town lost their grip on the Norman Matthews Floodlit Cup losing 2-1 to Tuffley Rovers at Cinder Lane. Captain Lee Clark was missing with illness after his exploits in Saturdays Great North Run. Central defender Lee Kiloyle also missed out after being injured in the warm up.

The first opportunity came on 22 minutes when a goalmouth scramble resulted in Andy Keveren shooting straight at James Price in the Town goal. Andy Keveren was again at the centre of things when he ran unmarked into the Fairford area and shot from 7 yards out past the despairing James Price into the top left hand corner of the net.

Half-Time: 0 - 1

Fairford looked determined to reduce the one goal deficit and did so in the 49th minute when Keith Walker played a good ball to Courtney Chessell on the edge of the box. Chessell showed great skill to flick the ball up, turn and lash the ball past Clarke at the right hand post from the edge of the area. Walker then had a header tipped over the bar by Clarke on 60 minutes and Carl Stevenson headed just wide from 8 yards out from a corner. Lee Stoddart also failed to hit the target from just inside the area, lashing his effort high and wide.

Keith Walker should have settled the game when a clearance landed at his feet from 15 yards out, but his first time volley spun agonisingly wide of the keepers left hand post with Clarke stranded. Tuffley were reduced to ten men in the 89th minute when Gary Cornwall lunged at Chessell with a two-footed tackle with the ball long gone. Referee Andrew Chislett-McDonald had no choice but send the Tuffley forward off the field with a straight red after a sinful challenge. However Rovers took the lead in injury time when they were awarded a free kick. A Tuffley forward tripped on the edge of the box when it seemed no Fairford player was close, but the referee gave a free kick that was dispatched into the top left hand corner past Price to send the visitors through and put holders Fairford out of the Cup.
