Pewsey Vales progress in the Norman Matthews Floodlit Cup came to an abrupt end at Abingdon United?s Northcourt Ground last night. Vale Manager Don Rogers was again unable to field his strongest side due to his mounting injury list.

Pewsey?s night of problems started as early as the 5th minute when the first chance fell for Abingdon after Dean Moss turned Pewsey defender Tony Dyer and putting Pete Moss in with a goal scoring chance but his shot on goal was weak. Abingdon dominated the first half and their first goal came on the 14th minute when Chris Hooper chipped the ball over the head of Pewsey keeper Anthony Betterton. Further goals by Frankie Dorrian 33 minutes Pete Moss in the 43rd and 44th minutes put the home side into a comfortable half time lead.

Half Time: 4 ? 0

Pewsey lost Tom Ritchie through injury bringing on Paul Day on the 56th minute. Pewsey was having a lot more of the play during the second half and home keeper Carl Wilkins saved a good effort by Darren Cummings after 57 minutes. The Pewsey injury list grew when defender Stuart Hodson was carried off with a hamstring injury on the hour being replaced by Chris Ashurst. With Pewsey still having a good period of play Barry Flippance shot on goal went just wide of the far post.

Pete Moss completed his hat-trick in the 84th minute he did well to stop a pass to him going over the right touch line and was allowed to run at the defence to beat Pewsey keeper Betterton with a great shot. Pewsey?s Cummings was fouled 30 yards out on the left side but Cumminig saw his free kick tipped over by the keeper. Vale got a consolation goal in the 82nd minute from Flippance who shot into an open net after twisting round goalkeeper Wilkins. But for several fine saves by the Vale keeper Betterton the home side could have had a higher score line.
