Fairford Town  1    Highworth Town  1

Wednesday, 02 October 2002

The 3rd match between these two clubs in the opening 7 weeks of the season produced a very poor match, with the ball being in the air for much of the match and frequent stoppages for injuries caused by heavy challenges, sorely trying the patience of both match officials and spectators alike.

Highworth's goal was scored from the penalty spot by David Webb after 23 minutes following a double challenge by Fairford?s Price and Jones on striker, Matt Saye. Both Fairford players were lucky to receive nothing more than yellow cards.

Highworth's efforts on goal petered out with the loss of strikers Saye and Fuller with injury either side of half time. Constant Fairford pressure resulted in an equaliser from Gareth Davies with a thumping five yard header on 79 minutes following two goal line clearances from a corner in the same move.

Referee Trask's patience with the antics of Fairford's Jones finally ran out after 85 minutes, when he had no option but to dismiss Jones for a shocking foul on Highworth's Matt Jack, which left the latter prone and receiving attention for several minutes. Jones exacerbated his problems by punching and smashing a pane of glass on entering the dressing rooms, a matter for which he will no doubt incur the wrath of the Fairford management following such a display of petulance.

All in all, a very poor game from two sides capable of playing much better football.
