First and foremost credit must go to Roger Keeling the Teversal Grounds man for producing a quality surface to play on after the Friday downpours that we incurred. Plus credit must go to both teams for producing an absolute quality game, which would have been a credit to the final, never mind the second round. The first half saw both teams playing neat and precise football, with both defences holding firm with Teversal offering a debut to Jonathan Flint at the heart of their defence. The tempo of the game saw passions starting to rise and Adam Cook of Teversal and Dunkirk?s Wayne Collings were caution on 31 minutes when their passions reached a bit to high for Mr Wilson?s liking.
Although the game was of high quality neither side created a goalscoring chance of note, which was testament to how well both back lines had played. The good sized crowd though were not to be disappointed with the final ingredient of goals being added in the second half to make this into a footballing classic. The Tevie boys started the goal spree on 48 minutes when they opened their account for the afternoon with a quality goal. Cockerill?s corner found Baines who squared the ball to Gomm who?s intelligent little flick back into the box found Flint who headed into the bath of Simon Bramley to fire home from 12 yards. A goal in keeping with the type of play that had been shown all afternoon.
Dunkirk were not to be out done though and two minutes later it was all square. Richard Ashwell held the ball up well out on the Teversal left, and then produced an inch perfect pass for Scott Wood to take the ball in his stride and place the ball into the back of the Teversal net to make it 1-1.
The game was swinging from end to end with both teams playing their part in this entertaining encounter. It was the home side who put their noses back in front on 56 minutes when the influential Cockerill produced a quality ball into the space behind the Boatmen?s defence to release Bramley to fire home his and Teversal?s second to make it 2-1. Colin Cockerill could have put some day light between the two sides when Hudson put him clean through on goal, but the impressive Whalin in the Dunkirk goal produced a top draw save on 58 minutes to keep the deficit still to a single goal.
The true worth of that save was realised on 65 minutes. When the visitors pulled level, this time it was Parker who produced a quality save to deny Ashwell, but unfortunately for the Tevie Goalkeeper the ball came back of the bar for Morgan to slide home the loose ball to level the scores at 2-2. Both sides were searching for the winner with there being no let up in the pace of the game at all. This time though, it was the visitors who thought they had scored the winner on 75 minutes. Another quality move saw Ryan Perkins produce a superb pass beyond the Teversal defence with that man Scott Wood again finding a top draw finish to make it 2-3 to the Boatmen.
You thought that was it, this game cannot produce any more excitement in the last 15 minutes to match what we had already saw, but you would have been wrong. Dunkirk kept their shape but became defensive minded with getting the ball clear the only real objective, with the quality of the build up not that important anymore. Teversal though through everything at their visitors and on 83 minutes pulled the tie back to 3-3. Colin Cockerill?s free kick caught the Boatmen all at sea with Ian Roe making no mistake from six yards, nothing more than the Teversal side deserved.
The draw was a fair result and it would have been harsh for any side to go out of the competition on the back of that performance. This result though means that the replay will now take place on Tuesday 13th November 2001 at Dunkirk?s Lenton Lane ground with a 7.30pm kick off.
This Saturday Teversal have a change of fixture and are now travelling to Stoke Lane to play Sneinton, leaving the Triple S at Skegby at 12.45pm.
