Sunday, 08 January 2012

Lakeside and St Marks met each other in the first game of 2012 in this local derby in what was a very heavy pitch. Lakeside started the game with the majority of possession and were quick to take advantage after a defensive mistake saw Louis Hyde to give Lakeside a 1-0 advantage. This did not dampen St Marks spirit with former Lakeside player Leroy Odiero on hand to put St Marks back on level terms with a low drive from outside the box in the 14th minute. Lakeside thought they had regained the lead only to see St Marks keeper Jacob Parker saving well from a point blank header from Scott Gourley. Although Lakeside were seeing the majority of the ball, Keeper Rob Jones was called into action when Liam Powell’s free kick was heading for the bottom corner, only for Rob to push away for a corner. Just before half time Kurt Burrows almost regained the lead for Lakeside, only to see his free kick hit the bar. Going into the second half St Marks were keeping 10 men behind the ball and withholding constant pressure, with the keeper making a fine save with his feet from Kurt. Lakeside’s best effort came when Brett Blake’s long range strike smashed against the post. Lakeside freshened up the team by making all three subs, the away team looked most likely to score. Although St Marks were defending in numbers, once again they were saved by the woodwork on the 75 minute with Luke Robson hitting the post. With the game heading for a draw, a free kick from man of the match Kurt Burrows was met by the head of Sam James to give Lakeside all three points.
