Hykeham Town 4 Boston United Reserves 3
Saturday, 22 October 2011
Overall a very high tempo encounter with Boston enjoying more possession & shading the earlier stages without capitalising on their advantage. Hykeham took the lead after 30 mins when a breakaway lead to pressure forcing defensive mistakes and the loose ball being smashed home by Rob Newman. Hykeham doubled their advantage when a slick break involving Mehta, Hanson & Good led to Ellis converting Good's slide rule centre. On the stroke of half time, Boston's Edwards pulled a goal back with a sharp finish from a cheaply conceded & poorly defended corner. In time added on for a bizarre injury to Asst Referree Mr Dudgard, Boston were awarded a controversial penalty when Hykehams Wallis appeared to win the ball first before Sargeant went tumbling. Despite a fine attempt from Sizer, Sargeant's penalty found the back of the net to send the sides in level at the break.
Boston took the lead 10 mins into the second half when Seargant robbed the Hykeham defence & squared for Jackson to finish neatly at the near post. Hykeham drew level after 65 mins when after Good was hauled over in the box, Coopers resultant penalty was emphatically dispatched. The game continued in the same open vein with both sides enjoying threatening raids, until Good broke away on the left after 70 mins & put Hykeham back in front with a neat finish. More drama followed on 80mins, when the unfortunate Ashworth's instinctive reaction was adjudged to be deliberate handball, although the red card that followed seemed a little harsh. Although Sargeant was still on the pitch having converted Bostons first half penalty, it was Edwards who stepped up for the spot kick to bring the game level. On this occasion however, Sizer saved Edwards effort well with his legs and the danger was cleared. Hykehams 10 men then held firm against Boston pressure for the remaining 10 mins plus injury time to record a satisfying victory in this pulsating match & great advert for the league.
