Desborough Town  2    Long Buckby  0

Tuesday, 04 March 2008

Desborough moved into second place in the Premier Division with this win, in the process all but ending Long Buckby's honours challenge.

Buckby were closest to a first half goal with Michael Evans in the Desborough goal saving superbly from Simon Underwood.

Top scorer Michael Byrne gave Ar Tarn the lead twelve minutes into the second half, scoring with a looping header after Jamie O'Neill headed the ball back across goal after a left wing build up.

Shortly afterwards a goalline clearance denied Carl Holmes an equaliser.

With eight minutes remaining Jamie Gilsenan missed the chance to wrap up the win when he failed to convert a penalty, Farhad Afandiyev atoning for his foul on Paul Caswell with the spot kick save, but two minutes later Paul Doherty sealed a vital victory with a debut goal, heading in a corner.

Desborough: Michael Evans, Michael Stanton, Chris Logan, Danny Pownall, Paul Malone, Tom Mills, Jamie O'Neill, Stuart McClarty (Paul Doherty), Michael Byrne (Tony Page), Paul Caswell, Jamie Gilsenan.
