Bourne Town  2    Holbeach United  1

Wednesday, 28 September 2005

The Wakes moved into the top seven with victory in this closely contested Lincolnshire derby at the Abbey Lawn. Bourne started brightly and took the lead two minutes in when Miles Mason was brought down as he jinked past Simon Markham. Mason confidently converted the spot kick. After Bourne bossed the first twenty minutes Holbeach came back into the game but it was the Wakes who were closest to further first half goals, with Richard Hitchinson having a shot blocked on the line by Martyn Cundy and Tommy Horwood forcing Kevin Cross into a full length save.

Holbeach forced the past at the start of the second period with Tom Gosling close to levelling the scores, but against the run of play the Wakes went further ahead after 55 minutes, Mark O'Dea's speculative 25 yard shot skidding off the sodden turf and under Cross's despairing dive.

O'Dea's through passes were giving the Tigers defence plenty of problems and Hutchinson had two chances to add to the home score, firing across goal and then forcing Cross into action. The introduction of substitute Neil Mitchell livened up the visiting attack and the speedy striker reduced the arrears after 86 minutes after his persistence forced a defensive slip, Mitchell rounding keeper Mick Hurst to slot home.
